Pressing in a football game:
There can be defensive pressing, midfield pressing, attacking pressing and pressing traps which you need to avoid. You may ask your players to “Stay on feet” so that they don’t over commit. Defensive midfield should not go too up front to create gaps in defense between midfield and defenders. So we are really concentrating on four midfielders for midfield pressing. If they are sitting deeper, then they are not effective in this role.
Keep a standard defensive line and a counter-attacking mentality. Don’t really need an offside line.
1) When the opposition has the ball, close down as high as you can and mark tighter.
2) Midfield center two play narrow, mark and press
3) Midfield players close down less so that they are not playing out of position.
Close down a right back on his left foot and a left back on his right foot. Close down any attacking midfielders and strikers using defenders. Ideally tight mark some of these. Close down central midfielders and wingers when they have the ball and maybe even tight mark one or two players. Create traps 3 to 1 for outside players usually defenders so that when they lose the ball in the attacking third, let’s see how you recreate that.
Retain possession. Pass into space. When forwards get challenged, they pass the ball quickly to an outlet, this keeps the attack in high tempo. And when forwards press the defenders the back four are going to run out of outlets. “Play against the ball” “Spielen Sie gegen den Ball“ “Marking shadow” in German “Kennzeichnung Schatten”
